About Conserve The Point

Conserve The Point – Topsail is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization founded in 2022 with a clear mission: to preserve and protect the south end of Topsail Beach, known affectionately as The Point. We also partner with conservation organizations on special projects to protect nearby coastal lands.

Our Mission

To protect, preserve, and steward the extraordinary natural and scenic resources of The Point on Topsail Island and other nearby coastal lands through community action, education, and conservation partnerships

Our Values

Our Story

We began as a small group of concerned neighbors in the fall of 2022, brought together by a shared concern over a proposed development on The Point—one of the last remaining undeveloped tracts on a North Carolina barrier island.

Motivated by the potential loss of this cherished coastal treasure, we quickly formed a nonprofit organization to serve as a hub for information and action. We created a website, launched a Facebook page, organized a petition drive, and mobilized the community.

Residents and visitors from more than 12 states contributed time, talent, and financial support for over 18 months. Volunteers attended town meetings, reviewed the development proposal, gathered signatures, and shared personal testimonies on why The Point mattered. Yard signs popped up across the island, symbolizing a growing, passionate movement to protect this extraordinary place—for our children, grandchildren, and all future generations.

Honoring Our Roots

We are inspired by the original Conserve The Point movement from 2005. That group, led by Maggie Chesnutt, opposed a previous development proposal and advocated for conservation. Maggie’s early leadership laid the foundation for the community-based preservation ethic we continue today.

As one neighbor put it:

“Let’s be brave and mindful of this beautiful island. Save its pristine southern end for our children, grandchildren, and beyond to enjoy—undeveloped.”

Success and the Road Ahead

Thanks to a shared vision and tireless collaboration, the dream to permanently conserve The Point has come true.

In March 2024, the NC Coastal Land Trust successfully negotiated a contract to purchase the property and launched the Save the South End campaign to raise $8 million. With support from the community and major conservation partners, the purchase was completed in April 2025. The Land Trust currently owns and manages the newly named “South Topsail Preserve” until ownership transfers to the NC Division of Coastal Management in 2026.
